Description about Porsche 928
The Porsche 928 is a grand tourer originally introduced by Porsche in 1977. The 928 is Porsche’s 2nd most produced car after the 911.
The 928 was the company’s first attempt at a luxury grand touring automobile, after realizing that their image was too closely associated with sports cars and racing, and not luxury vehicles.
The 928 was the first of the second generation of Porsches; it was the successor to the 924 and precursor to the Porsche 944. The original name was “929”, but this conflicts with BMW’s 3 series, so Porsche changed its name for marketing purposes to “928” which is 29 in reverse.
The Porsche 928 S4, released in 1982, was the ultimate evolution of the series. It used a 3.4-litre flat-6 engine with 308 hp (230 kW) and power was transmitted through an updated 4-speed manual transmission. The 928 had a top speed of about 170 mph (270 km/h), while accelerating from 0 to 60 mph (0 to 97 km/h) in 6 seconds.
History
The Porsche 928 was a grand tourer made by Porsche AG in two generations. The first generation ran from 1977 to 1995 and the second generation 1994 to 1995.
It was designed by German engineer Anatole Lapine, who had been involved with the 911’s development during the 1960s and 1970s. The engine was mounted longitudinally in a mid-engine configuration that would become Porsche’s trademark for their street cars, which began with the 924 and continue today with models like the Boxster and Cayman.
The 928 was designed to incorporate many features available on the 911 while using a larger combustion chamber for higher torque at lower rpm levels than its smaller predecessor. The design featured luxury trim including leather upholstery plus air conditioning and power windows all as standard equipment on US models.
The 928 was Porsche’s first front engine/rear drive car, which was a departure from their traditional rear-engined layout.
The 928 model debuted at the 1977 Germany: Zuffenhausenand became Porsche’s top-selling model until 1991 when it was surpassed by its successor – the 944.

The Design of the Porsche 928 from Concept to Reality
The car industry has long been fascinated with the idea of a “supercar”, a car that is much faster and more powerful than any other. In the early 1970s, Porsche focused on this idea. They wanted to create a car that would be faster than their current flagship model, the 911. The decision was made to combine two different models into one: the 911 and an all-new model created for this new category called “sports coupe”.
The design process for this new model took over 18 months and involved many people working in various capacities – engineers, designers, stylists, executives.
The Porsche 928 was the first car to have a production weight of over 1,500 kilograms. It was the fastest sportscar of its time and had an aluminium body with an integrated roll cage.
Porsche had to come up with a way to make the 928 look like a Porsche. The company went back to their roots and created the 928 with the same design principles as their first model ever built-the 356.
